With the help of LifeScan, Fitbit is doubling down on glucose.

Fitbit has collaborated with LifeScan, a diabetes tracking firm, to provide customers with the ability to check blood sugar changes within the Fitbit app.
LifeScan provides cloud-based glucose monitoring, which is detected by a finger prick of the user's blood, and the two ecosystems will now be linked.
LifeScan users can get a Fitbit Inspire 2 and a Fitbit Premium subscription as part of the collaboration. The business is pursuing the 'impossible' with glucose wristbands.
Fitbit's fitness and mindfulness material will be available to users, and they will be able to utilize it to help manage their diabetes.
According to LifeScan, the CDC estimates that between 33 and 50 percent of persons with diabetes suffer diabetic distress - overwhelming feelings that may drive them to fall into unhealthy habits, stop testing blood sugars, or miss visits with their healthcare team.
In addition, using a Fitbit tracker was associated to reduced fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1c, and LDL cholesterol in Taiwanese research.
In the Fitbit app, LifeScan users will be able to see blood sugar data alongside their daily fitness and activity numbers.
Fitbit added glucose tracking to its app earlier this year, but the information had to be manually entered. This collaboration with LifeScan appears to be a natural continuation of that.
Fitbit has made no secret of its goal to master non-invasive blood pressure monitoring, despite the fact that it appears to be a long way off. Fitbit CTO Eric Friedman told Wearable in an interview:
"What's intriguing about glucose is how common it is, so I believe it's something we're working on." However, Fitbit will benefit greatly from being able to analyse blood sugar patterns and link them to activity data. It was able to do so with manual tracking at first, but having automated data from a part of LifeScan's 20 million customers will help it greatly.
Fitbit is preparing ready for when non-invasive blood sugar monitoring and analysis becomes available.
