Googles smartwatch platform can expect new features with an upcoming update in Wear OS to be launched in April/May 2021. Third party tiles can be seen this time and tiles can be accessed via swiping the home screen to get a quick glance at data on weather, fitness, and health. The app developers can use these Tiles to provide data in the smartwatch, which is a decent improvement in Tiles.Jolanda Verhoef, Developer Relations Engineer said, Today, we're excited to announce that the Jetpack Tiles library is in alpha. This library enables developers to create custom Tiles on Wear OS smartwatches. These custom Tiles will become available to users later this Spring when we roll out the corresponding Wear OS platform update. In Fall 2020, Wear OS had brought new heart rate and activity Tiles into the platform. Other than that nothing exciting has been seen. Wear OS featured only in about 3% of smartwatches in 2020. Building Wear OS on top of OPPOs Color OS was a huge success. The battery life has also improved with Snapdragon Wear 4100.There are other smartwatches from One Plus and Motorola expected to be launched soon that will be running on this platform. There are rumors that Samsung is also working with Google, after a gap of 6 years, to build a Wear OS watch. Google is clearly open to partnership with more flexibility and this is a great step towards improving the platform. What we need to wait for is information on if there will be more features on health, fitness, wellness, sensors, music etc. or it is just Tiles.
