The new Coros Vertix 2 offers mapping as well as a long battery life.

Coros has unveiled the Vertix 2 outdoor adventure watch, which places a strong emphasis on battery life and mapping capabilities.

The Vertix 2 will be available in Obsidian and Lava hues and will cost $699. With its follow-up to 2020's Coros Vertix, the US sports watch maker, which has Garmin in its sights with huge feature sheets and affordable pricing, has undoubtedly made another strong move.

Big GPS overhaul

A dual-frequency GPS chipset lies at the heart of the new Coros, which may not seem particularly exciting but offers greater GPS coverage, specifically in densely forested areas or steep valleys. We've learned about it on the Huawei Watch 3 Pro, and Coros is preparing to make a big deal out of it as well.

There are three GPS modes that accommodate this hardware modification.

With one second GPS pings, Standard GPS will last 140 hours between charges. That puts it right up there with the longest-lasting sports watches on the market, however direct comparisons to standard settings from Garmin and Suunto should be avoided. That's because, although other companies have concentrated on settings that sacrifice accuracy in favor of increased battery life, Coros has chosen the opposite approach.

Only the secondary All Systems On mode (which is more equivalent to the Garmin Enduro) lasts 90 hours and uses GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou, and QZSS). The Enduro lasts 80 hours, which is still amazing, but in less precise modes, it may last up to 300 hours.

The ultimate mode, which lasts 50 hours, employs All Systems as well as the dual frequency chipset. Coros, on the other hand, offers next-level precision and is suited for hikes in valleys or under protection of trees.

So, even though Coros has changed its GPS power-saving approach, the battery life remains great. And the manufacturer claims that it will endure 60 days of regular use.

Mapping modes

New mapping features on the Vertix 2 add to the Vertix 2's battery life and GPS narrative.

Landscape, topographic, and a hybrid layer (which combines the two) are the three layers. This is a significant improvement over the Vertix in terms of navigation, and it makes it one of the few outdoor watches with mapping capabilities. These TOPO maps will also be added to the original Vertix and the Apex Pro by Coros before the end of 2021.

There have been modifications in the hardware as well. The screen has grown to 1.4 inches, with a pretty low-quality 280 280 resolution and 60 colours but it more than suffices.

There's also music playback, although it's still from MP3s that have been uploaded to the 32GB of built-in storage. As expected, there's a heart rate sensor, and the Vertix 2 will collect HRV every morning to determine stress levels. Eliud Kipchoge Edition PACE 2

Aside from the Vertix 2, the firm has also released a PACE 2 Eliud Kipchoge Edition. The watch, which was worn by the Kenyan marathon great in Tokyo 2020, is decorated in Kenyan national colors and has a Coros Pod sensor for enhanced training dynamics.

The bundle will be offered for $249 (a reduction from the usual $300 price) and will be limited to 5,000 units.

Both watches are already available for purchase on the Coros website, and we'll be putting the Vertix 2 to the test shortly to see if the Garmin and Polar competitor has created a fantastic sports watch.
