Samsung gets blood pressure approval and it's coming to Active 2 and new devices

Samsung has gotten approval for its blood pressure monitoring sensor, and the feature may go live by Q3 2020. The Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 has the sensor since launch. Beta trials were carried out in select countries, using an app developed by Samsung together with the University of California San Francisco.Prior to the medical approval, Samsung needed to issue a warning that it was not intended as a medical device or for use in the diagnosis of disease or other conditions, or in the cure, mitigation, treatment, or prevention of disease. Now the regulatory approval from the South Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) has changed all that, it is now cleared as a Software as a Medical Device (SaMD). According to the company, the feature will appear on the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active 2 in Q3 and subsequently to upcoming Galaxy Watch devices. However, we may not see the feature in the US or Europe quite yet as that would require approval from relevant regulatory bodies such as the FDA. In order to monitor blood pressure, the Active 2 has to be calibrated with a traditional cuff, then simply tap to Measure your blood pressure anytime, anywhere.The Samsung Health Monitor app has the potential to help millions of people around the world who are affected by high blood pressure, says Taejong Jay Yang, Corporate SVP and Head of Health Team, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics.
