Microsoft and Qualcomm have announced a collaboration to develop an augmented reality chipset that would power a pair of lightweight AR glasses that will be part of the Microsoft ecosystem. This new chipset will be built on both sides' software platforms, with Microsoft's Mesh and Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR Spaces serving as the software foundations for a pair of "very lightweight AR glasses," according to Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Amon, who announced the news at the company's CES 2022 keynote.Qualcomm's processor powered Microsoft's second-generation HoloLens headgear, so this isn't the first time the two have collaborated on AR projects. Mesh is a mixed reality technology from Microsoft that was unveiled in 2021 and is intended to allow individuals to share virtual experiences across devices. The news comes on the heels of speculations that Google is re-entering the AR smartglasses market with a new pair of glasses. This is reportedly fueled by Google's acquisition of North, a firm that had already produced a pair of linked AR spectacles and was about to launch a second pair when Google came in and scooped them up.Meta (formerly known as Facebook) has previously stated that it is interested in the mixed reality field, while it has also been speculated that development of an operating system for future VR and AR devices may have been abandoned. Of course, we can't dismiss the continuous rumours that Apple will release augmented reality glasses, with 2022 perhaps being the year. Will Microsoft and Qualcomm launch the first significant pair of next-generation AR glasses before Google, Meta, and Apple?
