Is Siri Listening into Your Personal Conversations?
, by raj, 1 min reading time
Siri on YOUR Apple Watch may be privy to your personal conversations through accidental recordings made by the smart assistant. The Guardian revealed that contractors employed by Apple have come across recordings made unwittingly by Apple product owners via Siri.So how are these recordings triggered? The raising of an Apple Watch triggers the watch to be ready for a "Hey, Siri" prompt. But even if the prompt is not received, the watch might still record up to 30 seconds of audio and store it. A whistleblower, talking to the Guardian, said: "There have been countless instances of recordings featuring private discussions between doctors and patients, business deals, seemingly criminal dealings, sexual encounters and so on." The contractor mentioned that this error was rampant across Apple Watches and HomePod smart speaker, but is definitely relevant to all Apple devices that use Siri. Though accidental activations of the smart assistant can happen now and then, no one imagined an error of this magnitude. So here is what you can do to prevent such recordings. Keep the "Hey, Siri" function turned off, if you are not using the assistant or you could turn off the raise-to-speak function.Apple has given out a few conciliatory statements as to why these recordings are made. The company wouldn't want a bad reputation for the Apple Watches, especially at a time when they are ready with the next iteration of its smartwatch.
