Another one bites the dust at Google. This time it is Daydream, Googles Virtual Reality platform. Google confirmed that it is winding up the Daydream View VR headset after it was found that Google Pixel 3a and Pixel 4 smartphones were not supporting it. In a statement, Google said it did not see the "broad consumer or developer adoption" that it had hoped for. Google also stated that it had been seen decreasing usage of the View over time. It has, however, promised to keep the Daydream app and store live for existing users.Google had been silent on Daydream for quite some time, which was an indication that the company was planning to abandon the project. There are also some rumours that several internal reorganizations had left the Daydream team decimated. One source also stated that Daydream was no longer the companys top priority and that the future of the project was unresolved. Google had also shut down its VR film studio, Spotlight Stories, earlier this year. The statement from Google is as follows: We saw a lot of potential in smartphone VR being able to use the smartphone you carry with you everywhere to power an immersive on-the-go experience. But over time we noticed some clear limitations constraining smartphone VR from being a viable long-term solution.Most notably, asking people to put their phone in a headset and lose access to the apps they use throughout the day causes immense friction. There also hasnt been the broad consumer or developer adoption we had hoped, and weve seen decreasing usage over time of the Daydream View headset. So while we are no longer selling Daydream View or supporting Daydream on Pixel 4, the Daydream app and store will remain available for existing users. It is hard to see the Daydream fade away. Maybe, just maybe, it will be reborn some day.
