Fitbit's ECG feature is available only on the Fitbit Sense, but the company is currently doing clinical trials on its PPG heart rhythm assessments. The aim is to equip a Fitbit device to constantly scan for heart rhythm problems. In the current set up on Fitbit Sense, the ECG app uses special sensors to take a manual spot check.But with this new technology, the app will use the optical PPG to continually scan the rhythm of your heart. In case a heart rhythm problem is detected, it will prompt you to take a manual ECG spot check.According to Dr Heneghan, the PPG is in no way less accurate than ECG, but an ECG comes in handy when you consult your doctor. We have no clarity on when the new feature will get approval but this new addition will make the ECG technology much more useful to more people.
