The latest IDC Worldwide Quarterly Device Tracker for wearables puts Apple (the apple watch, AirPods and Beats headphones) ahead of Xiaomi (Mi band3) and Huawei with respect to its shipment volume and market share. Samsung and Fitbit followed at fourth and fifth places respectively. When considering only wrist worn devices, for Q1, Xiaomi was seen on top (for market-share and shipments) followed by Apple and Huawei. According to IDC, global shipments for wearables for the first quarter of 2019 was around 49.6 million units (an increase of 55.2% from last year). The fastest growth was seen for ear worn devices or hearables, about 34.6% in Q1, which IDC attributes to smartphone manufacturers ditching earphone jacks. Jitesh Ubrani, research manager for IDC's Mobile Device Trackers says that this category of hearables is gaining importance as soon these ear-worn devices will be used as on-ramps to attract customers to own wearables that complement their smartphones, and eventually allow them to leave their phones behind when essential.Even so, wrist worn devices are still most popular especially those that allow the user personal health and fitness insights. This appears to be the trend for year with big launches anticipated form Apple, Fitbit, Garmin, etc.
