If recent rumors are to be believed, a new Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear wearable processor might be on the way.The new 5100 and 5100+ chipsets have been revealed by WinFuture, and they appear to provide considerable performance and battery life improvements. The Snapdragon 4100 architecture was introduced two years ago and is currently used in the newest generation of Wear OS smartwatches, such as the Fossil Gen 6 and TicWatch Pro 3 Ultra GPS.Last year, Qualcomm intimated that it was working on substantial new technologies, but nothing has happened since then. For those who are familiar with CPU jargon, WinFuture claims that Samsung (who makes Qualcomm silicon) will decrease the 5100's SoC from 12nm to 4nm, making it more power-efficient. This might result in longer battery life. However, according to the rumor, the primary core will remain an Arm Cortex-A53 running at 1.7 GHz, which is the same as the 4100.This follows Qualcomm's statements in a July 2021 meeting with Wareable about a new platform geared towards wearables for children, pets, and elders.Qualcomm stated that it was developing this processing platform "from the ground up," including a high-performance SoC and a co-processor for always-on use cases. Both are meant to be low-power devices to extend battery life.Snapdragon 5100/5100+ will also support PDDR4x RAM, and future watches will be able to utilise up to 4GB. A QCC5100 co-processor will be included in the Wear 5100+.So, when can we expect to see this in action? Not anytime soon even if Qualcomm removed the wraps from the Snapdragon 5100 right now, it would require months (at the very least) of testing before it could be used. But, combined with the new Wear OS 3.0, it's another piece of the puzzle pointing to a bright future for Google-powered smartwatches.
