According to business plans that have leaked describing some of the company's major releases in 2022, the Samsung Galaxy Watch 5 will go into production next year. It is stated that the Galaxy Watch 5 will be available in Q3-Q4, which corresponds to the months of July to December. That might point to a Galaxy Watch 5 release timeframe around the same time as the Galaxy Watch 4, which was released in August of this year. It's probably not a major surprise that another Samsung wristwatch is on the way, given they normally arrive once a year, but it does offer us a hint as to when we could see it.There's no word on what the Galaxy Watch 5 will come with, but we think it's reasonable to assume Google's Wear OS will be back on board. Samsung contributed to the development of Wear OS 3.0 and is presently the only smartwatch available for purchase that runs on it. Outside of Samsung's smartwatch, compatible wearables from Fossil and Movoi's current TicWatch series will have to wait until next year to see what new Wear has to offer. The announcement of a manufacturing timeframe for Samsung's next smartwatch comes at a time when the Galaxy Watch 4 is threatening Apple's market dominance in 2021. According to a Counterpoint Research analyst analysis on worldwide wristwatch shipments, the Watch 4 topped shipments in the third quarter. That's excellent news for Samsung and Google's Wear OS platform, which has failed to challenge the Apple Watch and other smartwatch competitors' supremacy.We were skeptical when the initial rumors surfaced that Samsung was considering ditching its own Tizen platform in favor of Google's. While the Google Wear experience on the Galaxy Watch 4 is currently very Tizen, Samsung and Google have stated that the platform will grow over time. Plus, since Google bought Fitbit in early 2021, we haven't seen Fitbit integrated into the Wear equation. More Wear OS smartwatches are expected to arrive in 2022, and it appears like Samsung will be part of that new watch army, helping to give Google's wearable platform a much-needed boost.
